The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
